The guidance released Monday by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) creates immense confusion and instability for thousands of international students at the University of Massachusetts, not to mention the million-plus international students across the country.  Nothing could be more disruptive than reversing course on a policy ICE promulgated in the Spring and Summer to suspend its rules prohibiting online enrollment while the nation’s colleges and universities contend with an ongoing and unprecedented public health emergency.

The Mauricio Gastón Institute for Latino Community Development and Public Policy at UMass Boston has released “COVID-19 and Latinos in Massachusetts," a research report to better understand the social determinants of health shaping the distribution of COVID-19 related morbidity and mortality in the state.

With the coronavirus pandemic persisting, people may be tempted to increase the use of disinfectants to help stem the spread of the virus. But these products contain Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered pesticides that can cause harm, especially if not used as directed.

On July 1, 2020, UMass Dartmouth will welcome John A. Williams, Ph.D., as the Dean of the Charlton College of Business.

Williams most recently served as Dean of the College of Business Administration at the University of New Orleans, a position he held since 2013. Before joining the University of New Orleans, he served as Director of the Department of Hotel, Restaurant, Institution Management & Dietetics at Kansas State University and as the Coordinator of the Undergraduate Program at Virginia Tech.

Kurt Schultz, SOM ’21, was recently awarded the 2020 AΩA Carolyn L. Kuckein Student Research Fellowship. The fellowship’s purpose is to foster the development of the next generation of medical researchers.

Upon notice of the award, Schultz received $2,500 to support him during his research period. An additional $2,500 will be paid after the receipt and approval of the final research report.

Sage Foley, PhD candidate in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, presented her research at a virtual event hosted by Karen Edelblum, PhD, of Rutgers University, called “Guts & Bugs: A Virtual GI Seminar Series.” The seminar features scientists and graduate students from all over the world and serves as a platform for scientific discourse during a time of social distancing. Foley’s session took place on June 11.

The stages in which ribosomes synthesize life-sustaining proteins have been revealed in unprecedented real-time detail by UMass Medical School structural biologists Andrei Korostelev, PhD, and Anna Loveland, PhD. Their new study of this fundamental molecular mechanism, captured using state-of-the-art, time-resolved, cryo-electron microscopy was published by the journal Nature on July 1.

Organizers have announced that the 22nd annual UMass Cancer Walk and Run scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 13, will take place online, with supporters able to participate remotely at locations and for distances of their choosing.
