Trademark & Licensing

The University of Massachusetts Trademark and Licensing Administration protects and manages the names, logos, and other identifying marks ("University Marks") across all five UMass campuses. We authorize the use of these marks through official license agreements, ensuring they appear only on high-quality, tasteful products and services. Our office is an independent licensing office.

Our mission is to:

  • Protect the UMass brand and reputation by licensing only approved vendors
  • Promote the University through quality, officially licensed merchandise
  • Preserve the value of UMass trademarks through legal enforcement
  • Provide funding for academic and athletic programs via royalty revenues

All UMass trademarks are protected by either federal, international or state laws, as well as common law rights.

For Students, Departments & Organizations

If you're creating merchandise with UMass marks:

  • Use a licensed vendor
  • Ensure the vendor meets FLA/WRC labor standards
  • Fill out a royalty waiver which provides you permission to use our marks
  • Approved vendors must show proof of insurance and follow our Code of Conduct

Look for the Label

When buying UMass gear, check for the "Officially Licensed Collegiate Product" authentication sticker or hang-tag, your assurance of authenticity and support for UMass programs.

the collegiate licensed properties label has a red and white background and bears a seal to indicate authenticity

With this label, alumni, students, fans and supporters know they are buying a product of quality and authenticity that has been manufactured in accordance with University standards. At the University of Massachusetts, net revenues generated through the sale of licensed merchandise support the University’s general fund for each of the five UMass campuses. Products that do not bear the label, but use the marks of the University of Massachusetts, may represent infringement of the trademark laws.
