Becoming Licensed
The University of Massachusetts Trademark and Licensing Administration oversees the licensing of all vendors creating UMass branded products both at retail and for custom-made merchandise orders using UMass Trademarks. Licensing helps ensure that the UMass brand only makes it onto quality materials and products. Please contact UMass System Associate Director of Trademark, Licensing & Marketing Kimberley Thornton to begin the Licensing Process and receive the application materials necessary to be recognized by the public and University system as a Licensed Vendor authorized to sell UMass Licensed merchandise!

The University of Massachusetts Trademark Administration Code of Conduct establishes the minimum ethical, labor, environmental, and workplace standards that all University trademark licensees and their contractors must follow when manufacturing producing bearing the UMass names, trademarks, and logos. Licensees are responsible for ensuring that all manufacturing partners comply with the code.
Core Standards: Licensees must maintain workplaces that meet or exceed applicable local laws and internationally recognized labor standards, including:
- Legal Compliance: Adhere to all applicable labor, environmental, and manufacturing laws. When UMass standards exceed local law, the higher standard applies.
- Ethical Business Practices: Conduct business with honesty, integrity, fairness, and respect for human rights.
- Fair Wages and Benefits: Pay employees legal or prevailing industry wages and benefits without unauthorized deductions.
- Working Hours: Limit work hours and overtime in accordance with legal requirements while providing employees with at least one day off every seven days.
- Overtime Compensation: Pay legally required overtime premiums.
- Child Labor: Prohibit the employment of workers below the applicable minimum working age.
- Forced Labor: Prohibit all forms of forced, bonded, prison, or involuntary labor.
- Health and Safety: Maintain safe and healthy workplaces and housing, where applicable.
- Non-Discrimination: Prohibit discrimination based on protected characteristics.
- Women's Rights: Ensure equal treatment, equal pay, safe working conditions, and prohibit discriminatory employment practices related to pregnancy or reproductive health.
- Harassment and Abuse: Prohibit physical, verbal, psychological, or sexual harassment and corporal punishment.
- Freedom of Association: Respect employees' rights to organize, join unions, and bargain collectively without retaliation.
Compliance Requirements: To obtain or renew a UMass trademark license, licensees must:
- Disclose all manufacturing facilities and contractors involved in producing licensed merchandise.
- Submit annual written certification confirming compliance with the Code.
- Report any material changes to their supply chain, including new factories or manufacturers.
- Verify ongoing compliance throughout their manufacturing network.
Monitoring and Enforcement: UMass requires licensees to maintain membership and be in good standing with the Fair Labor Association (FLA) and may utilize additional independent monitoring organizations, including the Workers' Rights Consortium (WRC), to verify compliance. When violations are identified, UMass may require corrective action, develop and monitor remediation plans, and terminate licensing agreements if violations remain unresolved.
