As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, healthcare workers have struggled to persist against the virus through a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks, gowns, gloves, and eye gear. To help mitigate the shortage, two members of the UMass Boston’s School for the Environment (SFE) collected PPE from their labs, donating it to Boston Medical Center this past Friday.

A donation of $8,500 from the City of Boston’s GRAD Last Mile Fund has put UMass Boston’s Chromebook drive over the top of its goal of securing 200 laptops to loan students. The drive has now funded 223 Chromebooks for students without laptops to help them succeed in a remote learning environment.

A new study by integrated primary care researcher and physician Paula Gardiner, MD, finds that an interactive website can bring proven, effective nondrug treatments like mindfulness, meditation and yoga to chronic pain patients who may not otherwise have access to them. Published in the Journal for Medical Internet Research, the study found that participants who used the electronic health toolkit Our Whole Lives for Chronic Pain reported increased ability to deal with their pain.
The American Academy of Microbiology (AAM) recently honored Peter Chien, professor in biochemistry and molecular biology by naming him to the 2020 class of Fellows of the Academy based on his record of “scientific achievement and original contributions that have advanced microbiology.” The AAM is the honored leadership group within the American Society of Microbiology (ASM), one of the oldest and largest scientific societies in the world.
