The UMass Amherst community is invited to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day virtually. 

The UMass ADVANCE team has announced the selection of four new teams for mutual mentoring grants, funded up to $6000 a year, over the 2020-21 year.

AMHERST, Mass. – Sarah Perry, a chemical engineer at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, is studying a new approach to protein stabilization based on how cells work at body temperature.

The Office of Faculty Development has awarded Mutual Mentoring Grants to ten teams and four individual faculty for 2020-21.

A group of biology faculty members expanding their existing learning community by creating focused mentoring groups and offering professional development in STEM education. 

The American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) recently announced that Alice Cheung, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, will receive the 2020 Lawrence Bogorad Award for Excellence in Plant Biology Research, made every other year to “a plant scientist whose work both illuminates the present and suggests paths to enlighten the future.”

Michelle Jurkovich, an assistant professor of political science and affiliated faculty at the McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies, has recently been named one of twelve Kluge Fellows at the John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress.

A doctoral candidate in UMass Boston’s Clinical Psychology PhD Program who is currently engaged in developing outreach material related to stress associated with the COVID-19 crisis has received the 2020 Distinguished Student Practice Award in Clinical Psychology from Division 12 of the American Psychological Association. Bryan Balvaneda is in his sixth year at UMass Boston.

AMHERST, Mass. – Answering an urgent call for assistance from regional health care systems, a volunteer team of scientists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is preparing, testing and delivering thousands of vials of viral transport media, a chemical solution needed for COVID-19 diagnostic testing. Their work is having a statewide impact.

The School of Public Health and Health Sciences (SPHHS) will hold its 23rd annual Research Day on Tuesday, April 14 in a virtual format that allows for remote participation. The annual event serves as an opportunity for the campus community to learn more about the research and practice conducted by SPHHS students.

In lieu of live poster presentations, students submitted abstracts to participate in the event. Abstracts will be collected into a book and posted online prior to the event.

AMHERST, Mass. — As campuses nationwide responded to the global coronavirus crisis by canceling events and transitioning to remote learning, an important opportunity for students studying race and its significance in America to gather and connect at a symposium held at a historically significant location was off the table.
