The UMass Medical School chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society inducted 26 School of Medicine Class of 2022 students as members on June 2. The students were nominated by their classmates and mentors as exemplars of compassionate, patient-centered care. Six residents and four faculty members were also inducted.
UMass Medical School scientists Katherine A. Fitzgerald, PhD; Fiachra Humphries, PhD; and Liraz Galia, PhD, working with the British-based pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline, have identified a novel molecule capable of stimulating the innate immune system against SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Cheers and tears broke out inside Worcester’s large-scale COVID-19 vaccination site at Worcester State University on Thursday, June 10, after two teenage brothers received the last two COVID shots before the clinic closed.
“I was honored by my team to give the last vaccinations,” said Beth Rust, RN, director of clinical operations at the WSU site.
“I have older relatives and I asked my parents to get vaccinated so that I could be safe,” said Malachi Monroe, 15, of Worcester, who received his second COVID vaccine after his brother Conley, 14. “It’s exciting.”

Researchers at UMass Medical School have reported on a case of mild heart inflammation in a young male who received an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention alerted health care professionals that it is reviewing several dozen cases of myocarditis that have been reported in adolescents and young adults after the second vaccine dose.
The 169 students of the School of Medicine Class of 2021, including 11 MD/PhD students and the Medical School’s first MD/MBA student, were recognized by institutional and alumni leaders for their resilience and commitment as they completed their studies during the worst global pandemic in a century. Their achievements were lauded June 4 at the annual UMass Medical School Alumni Association breakfast, held in the Albert Sherman Center.
The forecast for a hot, humid and joyful day was fulfilled as the UMass Medical School Class of 2021 graduates gathered with faculty, family and friends for the 48th Commencement on Sunday, June 6. The event was held in person following lifting of COVID-19 restrictions in recent weeks. The ceremonies took place on the sunny football field at Worcester State University due to construction underway on the Medical School campus.

When Fiona Bruce-Baiden ’21, still wearing her graduation gown, walked into a restaurant to celebrate with her family shortly after Commencement, other customers joined in the applause and cheers.
