UMass Amherst
Location: Rural
Located in the scenic Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, UMass Amherst’s 1,450-acre campus is nestled in one of America’s most iconic college towns.
School Size: Larger
UMass Amherst’s exceptionally accomplished student body of more than 30,000 makes it the largest public university in New England.
First-Year Housing: On Campus
UMass Amherst has the third-largest residential campus housing system in the country, with more than 13,000 students living in 52 residence halls. All students are required to live on campus for the first year.
Athletics: NCAA Division 1 and intramural
The UMass Amherst Minutemen compete at the highest levels in collegiate athletics — NCAA Division I — in both their men’s and women’s programs. UMass Amherst also offers dozens of intramural leagues for students.
Testing Reqs: Test Optional
Standardized tests are optional for first-year entering applicants. UMass Amherst will review applications with or without standardized test scores. Students who have taken the SAT/ACT exams are welcome to send their scores. Please refer to our test-optional policy page for more information.

UMass Boston
Location: Urban
UMass Boston’s beautiful oceanfront campus is located five minutes from downtown Boston, giving its students ready access to a vibrant culture and one of the nation’s strongest economies.
School Size: Mid-sized
With its diverse 16,000-student community, UMass Boston is one of the larger public universities in New England and is well-known for its student-centered teaching and supportive environment.
First-Year Housing: On or off campus
UMass Boston offers more than 1,000 first-year students access to on-campus housing. Because of its urban location, the majority of UMass Boston students choose to live in the city’s surrounding neighborhoods.
Athletics: NCAA Division 3 and intramural
The UMass Boston Beacons compete in the NCAA’s Division III with 18 varsity teams, and the campus offers intramural and recreational programs for students.
Testing Reqs: Test Optional
A typical application to UMass Boston should include SAT/ACT scores. However, UMass Boston does offer a no-test option for first-year applicants applying for Early Action or Regular Decision.

UMass Dartmouth
Location: Suburban
Located on 710-acres in the coastal town of Dartmouth, UMass Dartmouth is centered in the vibrant coastal region of southern Massachusetts.
School Size: Smaller
With 7,500 students on a campus just minutes from the coast, UMass Dartmouth is known for combining the resources of a research university with the tight-knit community and personalized instruction of a small college.
First-Year Housing: On or Off Campus
At UMass Dartmouth, more than 75 percent of incoming students live on campus. The university offers traditional residence halls, apartments and townhouses.
Athletics: NCAA Division 3 and intramural
UMass Dartmouth’s Corsairs compete at the NCAA Division III level in 17 sports, with 7 men’s and 10 women’s sports. The campus also has a number of club teams and hosts on-campus intramural leagues.
Testing Reqs: Test Optional
UMass Dartmouth is 100% test optional. The admission decision will be based on a holistic review of the application, including the high school record, recommendations, personal essay and other materials submitted by the applicant. An SAT score of 1080 or higher or an ACT of 22 or higher (1200 SAT and 25 ACT for nursing) are encouraged as many of our programs are competitive. UMass Lowell
Location: Urban
UMass Lowell's high-energy urban campus is situated in the historic mill city of Lowell, less than 45 minutes from Boston by car or public transportation.
School Size: Mid-sized
With more than 17,000 students, UMass Lowell is the second-largest UMass campus, the third-largest public university in all of New England.
First-Year Housing: On or off campus
At UMass Lowell, 92 percent of first-year students live on campus, and nearly 5,000 students live on campus at any given time. Due to its location in the city, many students opt to live in private housing.
Athletics: NCAA Division 1 and intramural
The UMass Lowell Riverhawks compete in the NCAA’s Division I in 15 sports and are most well-known for their perennial powerhouse men’s ice hockey team. UMass Lowell also offers numerous intramural and recreational programs.
Testing Reqs: Test Optional
UMass Lowell offers a no-test option, allowing prospective students to decide whether to include SAT/ACT scores in their application.
