The Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Bureau of Substance Addiction Services has awarded UMass Boston’s Institute for New England Native American Studies (INENAS) a contract for over $600,000 to provide outreach and activities in the Native American community for those affected by alcohol and opioid misuse.

A new study from UMass Medical School finds that younger children participating in snow sports are more likely to suffer severe head and facial injuries, while older kids and teens sustain more internal abdominal traumas. Serious injuries can occur while kids are sledding, downhill skiing and snowboarding.
LOWELL – UMass Lowell has dedicated Perry Hall Plaza, a new greenspace that is the latest step in the university’s work to further enhance the the beauty and sustainability of the campus.
The plaza is named for alumnus Barry Perry and his wife, Janice, who have been generous supporters of UMass Lowell and its students through establishing scholarships and helping to fund the renovation of the university’s main engineering building. That building, which dates back to the 1950s, was named for Barry Perry in 2012.
Iman Chahine, an associate professor of education, has received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to pursue ethno-mathematical research in South Africa for nine months.
Beginning in January 2020, Chahine will train South African teachers in high-needs districts in how to incorporate indigenous Zulu and Ndebele arts and culture into the high school math curriculum.
“Accelerating the Marine Science and Technology Corridor” along the SouthCoast of Massachusetts and throughout Cape Cod and Rhode Island was the focus as more than 150 leaders from industry, higher education, and government gathered at UMass Dartmouth today.
