AMHERST, Mass. – Breastfeeding women with a pathogenic BRCA1 or BRCA2 genetic mutation face a significant risk, even at a young age, of breast and ovarian cancer. Yet no fully effective breast cancer screening method exists for nursing mothers in this high-risk group, some of whom are diagnosed after the disease has spread, possibly becoming fatally metastatic.

The School of Public Health and Health Sciences (SPHHS) has announced the appointment of Christopher Greenfield as its new associate dean of administration and finance. Greenfield brings 16 years of strategic leadership experience to the school, most recently as the administrative director of primary care at Baystate Health in Springfield.

AMHERST, Mass. –This academic year marks the 50th anniversary of the East Asian languages and cultures (EALC) program in the department of languages, literatures, and cultures at UMass Amherst. EALC, formerly Asian languages and literatures, was started in 1969 under the guidance of the late William Naff. Its original mission was to teach Chinese and Japanese language and literature. Over the years, it has grown to incorporate new fields, such as language pedagogy and linguistics, and Korean Language and culture.
