The Mount Ida Campus of UMass Amherst has taken steps to implement Chancellor Kumble R. Subbaswamy’s decision to suspend in-person instruction and transition to remote course delivery upon the conclusion of spring break and at least through April 3.

Jeff Cournoyer, managing director of the Mount Ida Campus, sent an email to the Mount Ida community, noting that implementation will occur “considering our relative size, density and ability to implement social distancing measures.” Steps to be taken will include the following:

Associate Professor of Chemistry Jason Green is taking on the laws of chemistry through a two-year $234,800 grant from the John Templeton Foundation.

The Massachusetts Cultural Council has awarded University of Massachusetts Boston instructors Lillian-Yvonne Bertram and Krysten Hill with $15,000 Artist Fellowships for excellence, ingenuity, and diversity in poetry. Out of a pool of 650 artists, only 35 were chosen to be fellows, 13 of whom were poets.

The ALS Association - Massachusetts Chapter awarded John Landers, PhD, professor of neurology, a $25,000 grant to further his ongoing research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the motor neurons that control muscle cells. People with ALS slowly lose the ability to initiate and control muscle movement, which often leads to total paralysis and death within two to five years of diagnosis.

UMass Medical School-Baystate faculty leader Amy S. Gottlieb, MD, has been named recipient of the 2020 Elnora Rhodes Service Award by the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM). The award recognizes the highest level of service to the society and is given annually to an individual for outstanding service in upholding its mission of clinical care, research, education and community service in primary care internal medicine. 

The 15th annual Physician-Scientist Retreat at UMass Medical School was held March 6, shining a light on students working to complete medical and biomedical sciences doctoral degrees through the Medical Scientist Training Program.

It’s a day dedicated to inspiring prospective students and engaging faculty, alumni and students. The program can take up to 10 years to finish, as MD/PhD students pursue both of their degrees through the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and School of Medicine.

UMass Medical School perinatal depression expert Nancy Byatt, DO, is a principal investigator for a national study that will evaluate which components of three innovative programs for pregnant and postpartum women with depression are most effective. The three-year, $4.1 million funding award from the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute will be led by Dr.
