UMass Boston is a special place that needs and it deserves a special leader.

My mother, she saw the dark clouds that were gathering in Argentina. She became convinced that it was very important for me to seek safety in the United States.

The young man who spoke only Spanish at the time found his way to a community college in California.

And I was blessed because I transferred to the University of California at Berkeley. I really understood the extraordinary power of the public research university.

I am very proud to recommend Marcelo Suárez-Orozco be appointed chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Boston.

He's a person who's made it here through public education. So he becomes the personification of all that UMass can provide to our students.

Everyone's going to be excited about having him as our next chancellor.

I am grateful. I am humble. I am delighted. Muchas gracias.
