The event will bring together industry, academia, and policy leaders to promote marine-related growth
On November 1, UMass Dartmouth will host the Accelerating the Southeastern Massachusetts Marine Science and Technology Corridor: An Industry, Academia, and Government Collaboration symposium. This follows the highly successful 2018 symposium: Catching the Next Wave: Building the Blue Economy through Innovation and Collaboration.
The event will begin at 8 a.m. on November 1 in the Stoico/FIRSTFED Grand Reading Room, Claire T. Carney Library located on the main campus at 285 Old Westport Road, Dartmouth, MA.
The event will feature the UMass Dartmouth Public Policy Center’s final report on the region’s marine science and technology industry clusters. This report will inform UMass Dartmouth and the SouthCoast Development Partnership’s next steps in positioning the region as an innovative, international leader in the maritime industries. This initiative is funded by a U.S. Economic Development Administration Economic Adjustment Assistance Program grant. Beyond the presentation of the final report, the symposium will convene blue economy leaders to set the stage for year two of the project.
Congressman William R. Keating, Congressman Joseph P. Kennedy III, State Representative Antonio Cabral, Chancellor Robert E. Johnson, Debra Beavin of the U.S. Economic Development Administration, and SouthCoast Development Partnership Co-Chair Dave Slutz will speak on the importance of innovation and collaboration in the local economy.
There will also be updates from Vineyard Wind, the UMass Dartmouth Public Policy Center and a presentation on Portugal’s BlueTech Accelerator by Conceição Santos, Deputy Director General of Marine Policy, Portugal Ministry of the Sea.
The event will end with a panel discussion on undersea defense research featuring members of the UMassD College of Engineering, Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Raytheon, Hydriod, and General Dynamics.
