"The University of Massachusetts community was saddened to learn of the passing of former University of Lowell President and UMass Lowell Chancellor William T. Hogan, whose remarkable tenure at the helm of the university was marked by the reinvention of the campus, its academic reputation and its role in the region. Over more than 40 years at the university, including 25 as president and chancellor, he reimagined and redefined it as an engine for economic development that would not only advance the regional economy, but build the industries he knew would be critical to the future of the entire Commonwealth. He also created a model for city-university partnership with the City of Lowell that to this day remains crucial to the success of each. In many ways, Bill Hogan helped define the role of a modern public research university. On behalf of the five-campus University of Massachusetts system, we are grateful for his contributions and our thoughts are with his family and loved ones."
