Student Trustee-elect Maxwell White '23 is a political science major from Barnstable, MA.

Maxwell White, a junior political science major from Barnstable, MA, has been elected by his peers to represent the UMass Dartmouth and UMass system student bodies on the UMass Board of Trustees, the governing body of the five-campus, 75,000-student university system.

"It is an incredible honor to be named student trustee for UMass Dartmouth for the academic year 2022-2023. The UMass Board of Trustees acts as the highest governing body for all five UMass campuses, and I am excited to represent all UMass Dartmouth undergraduate, graduate, and Law students," said White. "Every voice deserves to be heard, and I cannot wait to get started and meet with any student who has a concern they want addressed to the Board, or any level of Administration."

White brings a strong résumé of experience in public service on- and off-campus. A resident assistant, chair of the student affairs committee for the Student Government Association (SGA), secretary of Model United Nations, volunteer coordinator, and chair of the UMass Dartmouth Votes coalition on-campus, White previously served as the president of the class of 2023 and as a macroeconomics tutor.

Off-campus, White has interned for the Mayor’s office in Fall River and a Fall River legal office, conducted policy research for the Alliance of Citizen Engagement, and tutored for the university's AmericaReads program.

As student trustee, White is tasked with representing UMassD students and students across the university system by offering a student’s perspective to the UMass Board of Trustees, attending campus and community meetings, addressing university policies and expenses, and answering questions for the student body.

"Too many students don't know what goes on in administration. It's going to take a consistent effort, but I'm hoping to foster greater communication between administration and students," said White. "The two SGA events each semester, Shake the Ship and Reset the Sails are great, but I want to increase the volume in which students' concerns are heard beyond those two events. Working with our great student organizations, campus partners, and on-campus organizations like the Frederick Douglas Unity HouseCenter for Women Gender and Sexuality and more, I look forward to improving the student experience at UMass Dartmouth for everyone!"

White will succeed Narcisse Kunda ‘22, who is graduating next week, on July 1. Then he will look forward to hearing what's on his peers' minds. Students may email concerns to White directly at mwhite7@umassd.edu. He will also takeover @UMDStudentTrustee from Kunda on July 1.
