I believe the University of Massachusetts is the most important institution in Massachusetts in terms of social mobility and economic development, ranking first or second in the number of degrees awarded in areas of critical importance for the Massachusetts economy, like the life sciences, computer science, business and engineering. It's a university that educates 73,000 students every day in graduate 17,000 graduates every year.

UMass is a research powerhouse with more than $600 million in annual expenditures. That's the third largest research university in New England. But what's really exciting is the impact that our research has inspiring our students to graduate school or to take a job at one of the startups to spin off from that research. It's one of the reasons the state has such a robust innovation economy. We are the future of Massachusetts. That's why we're here.
