South Shore Hospital in Weymouth has received a donation of much-needed masks, gloves and gowns from the veterinary technology program at the UMass Amherst Mount Ida Campus.

AMHERST, Mass. – Student members of the University of Massachusetts Amherst Emergency Medical Services (EMS) are using their skills and training in their home communities during this period of distance learning and absence from the Amherst campus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Things are a little different at UMass Dartmouth these days. You may have received a few emails regarding changes to the way we operate due to the spread of the coronavirus. Though we are not on campus together, we still interact in the virtual classroom, on video chats, and via email. Each of us is facing similar challenges and adapting collectively. We will continue to press forward to support our students’ ambitions and each other’s wellbeing. We are in this together.

“Onward and upward! Maybe with a few loop-dee-doodles along the way, just for fun,” exclaimed Susan Gagliardi, PhD, professor of neurology.

This was just one of the many virtual messages that UMass Medical School faculty had for their School of Medicine students on Match Day 2020. In an online approach for this year’s graduating class, as COVID-19 continues to spread nationwide, students found out where their medical careers will begin through email. 

AMHERST, Mass. – Five student firefighters from the University of Massachusetts Amherst Student Force have been promoted to full-time at the Amherst Fire Department, boosting the department back up to full staffing through June. They will assist with staffing during this period of responding to COVID-19.

The Integrated Concentration in Science (iCons) Program has appointed Wesley J. Dunham as its new strategic communications and program manager. Dunham, who started his new role on March 23, holds administrative responsibilities for iCons Program operations and expansion, student recruiting and admissions, managing program assessments, interfacing with program partners, and creating and executing strategic communications to meet program objectives.

As UMass Amherst shifts to remote learning for the remainder of the spring semester, the School of Public Policy (SPP) is finding ways to keep students and faculty connected outside of the classroom as well, with virtual discussion groups, community meetings and even an online networking “road trip” for students.

When Ryan Hollander, a 2017 vocal jazz performance graduate, saw many of his favorite artists presenting live streamed performances during the COVID-19 pandemic, it struck a chord. “I admired the way they were able to adapt and think ahead in order to continue sustain themselves with their craft and their passion in these strange and difficult times,” commented Hollander. “I thought of all the music that I used to hear every day in the halls of the Fine Arts Center, and how great it would be to re-connect with my fellow alumni.” 

AMHERST, Mass.— Shannon Silva, a biology major and Commonwealth Honors College junior, has been named a recipient of the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship, awarded by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation.

Olivia Laramie, a graduate student at the School of Public Policy, presented a paper at the 16th International Research Association for Interdisciplinary Studies (RAIS) Conference on Social Sciences and Humanities. Hosted by John Hopkins University, the March 30 and 31 conference was held online in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.
