On October 28, 2020, UMass Dartmouth announced a $4.2 million grant from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) to fund new research projects through the Marine and UnderSea Technology research program (MUST) in partnership with the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport (NUWC). This latest award follows a $4.6M grant from the Office of Naval Research in February 2020 - the largest research award in the university’s history.

UMass Dartmouth is once again of the nation's most environmentally responsible colleges according to the recently published, The Princeton Review Guide to Green Colleges: 2021 Edition. The Princeton Review surveyed administrators at 695 colleges in 2019-20 about their institutions’ commitments to the environment and sustainability. Editors analyzed more than 25 survey data points in the process of choosing schools for the guide.

But nearly every summer weekend is a UMass Lowell homecoming for the Hulmes – grandparents Gilbert ’62 and Marlene, parents John ’90 and Kathy ’89, and children Jacob ’17 ’19, Lucas ’19, and Katelyn ’21 – as they gather in three tiny summer cottages on Cobbetts Pond in Windham, N.H., with their UML spouses, sweethearts and friends.

The university’s Rist Institute for Sustainability and Energy (RISE) recently awarded its inaugural 2020-21 fellowships to Asst. Prof. of Economics Kelly Hellman, plastics engineering major Kerry Candlen and chemical engineering major Maria Fonseca-Guzman.
 

In the 138 classrooms and labs currently in use this semester by students and faculty, building ventilation systems bring in 100 percent fresh, outside air while exhausting 100 percent of the rooms’ return air outdoors again.

The air in most of those rooms is exchanged at least six times an hour, passing through filters with a minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) of 13 or better, which meets the standards set by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).

Unprecedented. Almost everything about the 2020 presidential election is different than before, from a campaign waged during a pandemic to the number of votes cast five days before Election Day – 80 million. 

“More people will vote in 2020 than any previous election,” Chancellor Jacquie Moloney told a virtual audience drawn from the campus and community for a discussion on the historic election. 

Two years ago, Emma Valentine arrived on campus with a love of theater cultivated during four years of acting at Woburn High School. She was far from alone. The business major found UML’s student-run theater group, the Off-Broadway Players (OBP), and climbed onstage. 

Last year, as a sophomore, she acted in and directed “She Kills Monsters,” a play by Qui Nguyen. Valentine was also elected the group’s vice president.

The new education and research building, to be located between the Lazare Research Building and the Albert Sherman Center, will expand the research and educational capabilities at UMass Medical School. The benefits of this project for the Medical School’s research and academic missions are significant. It also means the campus is about to begin a three-year construction project that will have significant impacts on daily activities.

The fourth Diversity and Inclusion Campus Conversation, held virtually on Thursday, Oct. 29, focused on achieving LGBTQ health equity. Chancellor Michael F. Collins opened the session with the announcement of a new scholarship fund established by anonymous donors in honor of William Thomas O’Byrne, MD, a physician and faculty member at the University of Alabama School of Medicine and LGBTQ advocate who died in 2018.

Thirty-four teams of School of Medicine and Graduate School of Nursing students presented their Population Health Clerkship projects virtually on Friday, Oct. 30. The clerkship is a two-week, interprofessional learning experience required of all second-year medical and nursing students, exposing them to hands-on experience with social determinants of health and community practices.
