‘We met on Valentine’s Day... when he was on a date with another girl’

Alexandra (Saracino) Smith, UMass Amherst ’14 and Daniel Smith, UMass Amherst ‘12

“My husband and I met on Valentine's Day when he was on a date with another girl. We were both students at UMass, and he had taken a girl he knew to the Hadley movie theater. I was out with my single lady friends and one of our guy friends crashed our party (much to my dismay).

While standing in line for concessions, my guy friend started talking to my husband, since they had lived in the same suite in Sylvan, and I naturally barged in. We talked for about a minute and then went our separate ways.

The next day, I got a text message from my friend saying that that random dude I met had liked me. Less than a week later, we went on our first date. Two and a half years later we moved in together, and three and a half years later he proposed. We just got married in October.

This Valentine's Day will be our fifth anniversary of knowing each other. In case you are wondering, no, we do not go to the movies on Valentine's Day; I know what he's up to!”
