'UMass ... ultimately brought us together and kept us together'

Sarah Detore and Adam McSherry, UMass Amherst ‘14

“Adam and I knew each other in high school, because we both worked for the recreation department in Stoughton, Mass; he worked as a lifeguard at Ames Pond, and I worked as a camp counselor. At the recreation department's end-of-the-summer dinner at Town Spa in Stoughton, Adam and I realized that we would both be attending UMass Amherst in the fall. Not only that — we would be living in the same dorm (Dickinson), in the same major (Biology and Pre-Med/Pre-Dental) and in three of the same classes!

Our relationship took off from there. We studied together, hung out at his friend's fraternity on weekends, and eventually started dating in November of our freshman year. The opportunities that UMass had to offer ultimately brought us together and kept us together. For our 5-year anniversary last year, we visited UMass and spent a whole weekend reliving the best years of our lives.

UMass not only prepared Adam and I for medical and dental school, but it allowed our relationship to grow stronger, and for that we could not be more thankful. Adam and I will be graduating from the University of New England School of Osteopathic Medicine and the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, respectively, in May 2018, and two weeks after that is our wedding!! #UWereUAreUMass”
