‘Every time I question myself, he is there to support me’

Cansu Gumus, UMass Amherst ‘17 and Noam Goldstein, UMass Amherst ‘15

"Both my boyfriend and I were grad students at UMass Amherst (in different departments). One day I was invited to a potluck dinner by a friend who was also studying at UMass. There I met the love of my life, who was invited to the same dinner by my friend’s roommate, who was in the same department as my boyfriend.

After a few months, we realized we were in love, and it has now been more than two years since then! My boyfriend finished his degree in 2015 and got a job nearby. I am finishing my degree this May.

We are both international students. So, we became like each other's family here. I have no idea how I would handle the stress of the PhD without him. He has always been there for me since the beginning. Every time I question myself, he is there to support me.

We are from different cultures and religions, but we don't care about such differences. If it wasn't for UMass, we would be both miserable today..."
