Meet Zayna Basma, a rising senior and political science major at UMass Lowell who’s interning for U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren this summer. As part of the Warren team, Zayna spends her days helping constituents and responding to immigration issues throughout the Commonwealth. She said she feels lucky to intern for the “powerful and influential” senator.
“In one month, I have seen so many ways in which the senator’s office reaches out to help those in need and helps everyone, no matter their political party or background or circumstance,” she said.
Zayna’s passion for helping people extends far beyond her internship. During the school year, she works at SayDaNar Community Development Center, a nonprofit in downtown Lowell that provides educational tools and support to refugees living in Lowell. She also runs the UMass Lowell move-out program, which donated more than five tons of goods to local charities this spring. After graduation, Zayna plans to attend graduate school and pursue a public policy program that will allow her to advocate on behalf of those who cannot advocate for themselves.
“I'm thankful to UMass Lowell for the hands-on experiences that have prepared me for real world opportunities, like this summer,” she said. “The political science department has pushed me to pursue my passions, never back down and continue to ask questions.”
