Meet Stephanie Murray, a rising senior and journalism major at UMass Amherst who's interning with the State House News Service this summer. The Tyngsboro native spends her days covering all things political, from legislative hearings and House sessions to protests on the State House steps. As part of an online wire outlet, she's expected to turn her stories around quickly, something her time as editor-in-chief of the digital-first Amherst Wire has prepared her well for.
Stephanie landed the internship by reaching out to UMass Amherst alum and State House News owner Craig Sandler, who was impressed by her experience; Stephanie has previously worked for the Lowell Sun and the Daily Hampshire Gazette and recently won a national reporting award that earned her a 10-day study trip to Japan. After graduation, she hopes to become a reporter in Washington, D.C. with a focus on politics and policy.
"I feel really grateful that UMass has helped me follow my dream of becoming a political reporter," Stephanie said. "I look forward to coming to work every day and being in the engine of Massachusetts state politics. It's just a great experience, and this is the best possible way I could be spending my summer."
