Meet Sara Tariq, a Pakistan native and rising junior at UMass Boston who spent the summer working for Massachusetts Senator Linda Dorcena Forry, whose district includes South Boston, Mattapan, Hyde Park and Dorchester, where UMass Boston is located.
Sara initially reached out to the senator’s office the day after first seeing her speak in public.
“It was very inspiring to see her enthusiasm to get to know the people and take a stand for them,” she says of Sen. Forry.
Two weeks after sending in her resume, she had an internship.
As an intern in Forry’s office, Sara spends her time researching issues, writing policy briefs and talking points, working on community concerns and staying updated on the district. Sara says she was thrilled to work on "specific projects to make the lives of those in the district better.”
“Working at Senator Forry’s office gives me a perspective of what it’s like to work for the people,” she said. “Her work ethic and passion to serve is very inspiring. I love the energy in the office, I learn something new every day and I am very happy that I decided to spend my summer at the State House.”
According to Sara, the highlight of the internship has been the State House’s intern speaker series, where officials including Gov. Charlie Baker and former Gov. Michael Dukakis discuss their careers in public service and share what they’ve learned along the way.
“It’s extremely motivating to hear their journey and the challenges they have faced,” she said.
After graduating from UMass Boston, Sara plans to attend law school and pursue a career in public service. She credits UMass Boston’s “engaging“ faculty and staff with motivating her to pursue her internship.
“They want to see their students succeed,” she said.
