Alvin Buyinza, UMass Amherst '19, WBUR

'My education at UMass prepared me to work in fast-paced environments and meet deadlines as quickly as possible'

Meet Alvin Buyinza, a rising junior studying psychology and journalism at UMass Amherst who's interning at WBUR's "On Point with Tom Ashbrook" this summer. As a production intern, Alvin is responsible for pulling comments from the radio station's website and social media channels to be read live on air, editing sound bites to be featured in on-air segments, pitching ideas for upcoming shows and working with producers to help create the next day's show.

Alvin says the internship has taught him a range of skills - from writing in AP style to using the digital audio workstation Adobe Audition - and gave him the rare opportunity to co-produce a live show on black motherhood in the media.

"I found it to be wonderful, and it was a great way for me to get my feet wet in production," he said.

The Woburn native, who is a news writer for the Massachusetts Daily Collegian during the school year, says he is interested in stories that create conversations on a sociopolitical level. After graduation, he hopes to become a political journalist in Boston and ultimately a White House correspondent.

"Having an internship at 'On Point Radio' is an amazing way for me to get my name out there and learn about the journalism industry," Alvin said. "I am networking with a number of people who are big names in the news industry, so I have great mentorship. My education at UMass prepared me to be someone who can work in fast-paced environments and meet deadlines as quickly as possible."
