UMass Boston’s online bachelor’s program ranked No. 49 in the nation and No. 3 in New England — jumping 11 spots from last year — by U.S. News and World Report in an annual list of the Best Online Programs released this week.

One of the leading voices on excellence in higher education, U.S. News also ranked several of UMass Boston’s online graduate programs among the top 100 in the nation.

UMass Boston’s online graduate education programs rose 34 spots to rank 54th nationwide, online graduate education programs for veterans ranked 17th, and online graduate business programs (non-MBA) ranked 89th.

“UMass Boston is dedicated to teaching as broad an audience as possible and to delivering the highest quality, most affordable education online,” Interim Chancellor Katherine Newman said. “We consider all of our online students part of the family and are thrilled to learn that the value of their degrees is nationally recognized.”

This is the third year UMass Boston has been recognized for outstanding online programs.

U.S. News & World Report evaluated several factors to rank the best online degree programs, looking at traditional academic standards like graduation rates and faculty qualifications, but also how effectively institutions adjust their programs and student support services for online learners.

This year’s rankings evaluate 1,545 programs across the country – up from 1,490 last year – including both bachelor’s and graduate programs in fields like nursing, education, business, and engineering. U.S. News also ranked UMass Amherst and UMass Lowell among the top 50 online bachelor’s programs in the nation.
