UMass Boston Is Recipient of Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award

The University of Massachusetts Boston has been named as a recipient of the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.

The HEED Award honors colleges and universities that focus on all aspects of diversity, including gender, race, ethnicity, and looks at populations such as veterans, people with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ community.

“Our standards are high, and we look for institutions where diversity and inclusion are woven into the work being accomplished every day across their campus,” said Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.

UMass Boston was one of 83 recipients this year, and one of only three in Massachusetts. The university will be featured in the magazine’s November issue.

“UMass Boston welcomes into its student body, faculty, and staff a broad spectrum of people across all races, ethnicities, ages, and sexual orientations,” said UMass Boston Chancellor J. Keith Motley. “We know the academic experience here is enriched and enhanced by the inclusion of the varied backgrounds and perspectives that we all bring to UMass Boston. The result has been a richness of diversity unmatched by any other public university in New England.”

Although UMass Boston has long had the most diverse student body in of any university in New England, in recent years Chancellor Motley has led an effort to broaden the diversity focus across campus by establishing an Office of Diversity and Inclusion and hiring the university’s first chief diversity officer.

INSIGHT Into Diversity, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education, established the HEED Award in 2012.
