In a Q&A with The Boston Globe, President Marty Meehan discusses how Massachusetts should build upon the success of General Electric’s move to the Bay State and how education and research innovation is vital to the continued success of the state economy.

Citing sluggish growth for federal research and development funding, President Meehan emphasized the importance of increasing investments in education and “getting serious” about funding research at the federal level.

President Meehan identifies key areas and industries of opportunity for growth and how UMass plays a critical role in development. President Meehan sees opportunities in emerging industries where Massachusetts has an edge, including big data, digital healthcare, cybersecurity, robotics, flexible electronics, marine science, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing.
