The University of Massachusetts seeks to be the Commonwealth's resource for improving K-16 STEM education by providing leadership, curriculum development (both K-12 and public higher education), higher education and K-12 teacher preparation, research, and STEM policy development and advocacy. Strong leadership and central coordination of effort are essential if the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is to develop a workforce with the scientific and technology literacy necessary to remain competitive in the increasingly global, technology-driven economy. The University of Massachusetts is uniquely positioned to provide such leadership; to facilitate development of a shared focus and direction for STEM education statewide, to serve as a conduit among the many fragmented approaches currently being pursued, and to build bridges among the Commonwealth's many STEM stakeholders.
