UMass Credit Rating

Current UMass Credit Ratings

Credit ratings identify an entity's ability to pay investors both principal and interest on their investment. The current credit ratings for the University of Massachusetts are "A+" and "A" as rated by Fitch IBCA and Standard & Poor's rating agencies, respectively. You can find more information on these agencies and the credit rating process in general at the Fitch IBCA Web Site and the Standard and Poor's Web Site. The current credit rating for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is "AA". AAA is the highest achievable rating based upon the scale used in the University's rating and the University's rating is considered investment grade. See definitions of ratings.

Based upon the circumstances of a future University bond issuance through Massachusetts Health and Educational Facilities Authority, the University can enhance the rating of the bonds through various means, including the purchase of bond insurance or entering into a Letter of Credit arrangement. These types of enhancement mechanisms allow the University bonds with A+ and A underlying ratings to trade at a higher credit level such as AAA.
