University of Massachusetts > STEM > Technology Networking Ideas for Learning
This developing arena on the web is providing opportunities for educators to expand the settings in which students learn. Educators are being encouraged to explore these avenues to determine how best to use them for instruction. Each day new sites are being developed. We seek suggestions for addition to this list from our colleagues.
At the STEM Summit V on October 28, the Wingspread strand will focus on this topic.
- FedoraCommons, an open platform for creation, management and exchange of durable digital content
- Moodle, a no-cost course management system
- Ning, a social networking system which lets you create a community
- An example: The Falmouth Kids Global Climate Change Institute is a unique opportunity for teachers and students to communicate and collaborate with a global audience as they study the causes and effects of global climate change. This project was designed to inspire teachers to empower students to use Web 2.0 tools in contextual learning environments
- Scratch visual programming environment and toolkit, lets kids make games, animated stories, interactive art, and share with others on the Net
- Twitter, a service for friends, family, and co-workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?
- del.icio.us, is a social bookmarking website -- the primary use of del.icio.us is to store your bookmarks online, which allows you to access the same bookmarks from any computer and add bookmarks from anywhere, too. You can also use del.icio.us to see the interesting links that your friends and other people bookmark, and share links with them in return.
- Think of Jing as a supplement to all your chat discussions, email threads, forum posts and blog entries. It sits nicely on your desktop, ready to capture and share your stuff at a moment's notice. Simply select an area of your screen, capture it as an image or record it as a video, and then click Share. Jing conveniently places a URL to your content which you can paste into any of your conversations.
- Google Docs is a free web-based word processor and spreadsheet, which allow you share and collaborate online. Get started with a free Google account.
- Diigo is a powerful research tool and a knowledge-sharing community which allows you to highlight and share the web! If you browse or read a lot on the web, we believe you will find Diigo indispensable. Diigo is two services in one -- it is a research and collaborative research tool on the one hand, and a knowledge-sharing community and social content site on the other.
- Skype is software that allows users to make telephone calls over the Internet. Calls to other users of the service are free of charge, while calls to landlines and cell phones can be made for a fee. Additional features include instant messaging, file transfer and video conferencing.
