WPI Offers Engineering is Elementary Professional Development Workshops

During the 2008-2009 academic year, the Office of K-12 Outreach at WPI will offer six teacher workshops on the Engineering is Elementary (EiE) curriculum sets. Each workshop will be held on-site in the district of the applicant school and occur during planned professional development time.

Workshop Information

Engineering is Elementary combines standards-based Technology/Engineering and Language Arts materials into engaging stories that teachers can use for instruction. While most K-5 teachers are comfortable with student learning within language arts, they do not have the same level of confidence or familiarity with engineering. The center will provide professional development for teachers utilizing fully developed sets of Engineering is Elementary materials in order to help create an understanding of engineering at the K-5 level.

*What WPI's K-12 Outreach Office will provide:*

• A professional development session (typically 4-5 hours long) on any one of the EiE units listed in the Desired EiE Unit table on page 5.
• Comprehensive instruction by Dr. Martha Cyr and an experience EiE teacher for a minimum of eight and a maximum of twelve K-5 teachers at a location arranged by the applying district.
• A full materials kit for each participating teacher in order for them to implement the unit in their classroom (kits have supplies for 25 students), a teacher guide for the EiE unit, and a set of classroom story books to share with one other teacher (24 books per two classrooms).

*What the applying school district will provide:*

• A list of teachers who will participate in the program.
• The physical space for the professional development workshop.
• Date(s) and times that they would like the professional development to take place.
• Funds to pay for the professional development time for the two leaders.
• The selection of one EiE unit that will be taught in the professional development session.
• Enrollment of at least eight teachers in workshop (teachers from other school districts may be enrolled to meet this requirement).
