Urban Prep Academy for Young Men opened its doors in 2006 after four years of planning. Now, the school is poised to replicate its model in Chicago and beyond. This presentation will describe the history of starting this school that serves African-American males, how the school sustains its unique culture and curriculum, and the process for replicating Urban Prep's success. Real life examples of the challenges facing Urban Prep both internally and externally will be presented and discussed. At the end of the session, participants will have a clear understanding of what Urban Prep is, the promising practices utilized to ensure academic and social-emotional growth of students, and the journey any group can take from idea to launch to replication.
