Opportunities for Educators

Conference 2007

Call for Contributions and Conference Registration

The 2007 Annual Meeting of the Northeast Region of the Association for Science Teacher Education will be held October 18-19 at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

The Association for Science Teacher Education (formerly the Association of Educators of Teachers of Science - AETS) has as its mission, "to promote leadership in, and support for those involved in, the professional development of teachers of science.  ASTE serves educators involved in the professional development of teachers of science, including science teacher educators, staff developers, college-level science instructors, education policy makers, instructional material developers, science supervisors /specialists/ coordinators, lead/mentor teachers, and all others interested in promoting the development of teachers of science."

The ASTE-NE shares this mission and seeks to serve science teacher educators in the northeast region of the United States. The Annual Meeting of ASTE-NE as usual will feature a professional, but relaxed and informal atmosphere; active discussions of issues in science teacher education with knowledgeable friends and colleagues; and the opportunity for new ideas and new friendships. This year the meeting is at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Amherst is located in western Massachusetts in the Connecticut River Valley just to the east of the Berkshire Mountains. It is 90 miles west of Boston, 100 miles east of Albany, NY, and 150 miles northeast of New York City. Amherst is served by Amtrak and Peter Pan Bus lines. It is 45 miles from Bradley International Airport, which is served by all major carriers including Southwest Airlines.  Amherst and the neighboring city of Northampton are the cultural centers of the Pioneer Valley region. Many artists and musicians make the !

Pioneer Valley home and there will most likely be multiple cultural events happening in the evenings. There are also a number of high quality restaurants in both Amherst and Northampton. In addition, galleries and shops are open late on Thursdays. Information is available at http://valleyadvocate.com/ and other websites.

The Meeting will begin at 8:00AM Thursday October 18 and end about 1PM on Friday October 19. Breakfast and lunch will be provided on both days.  As has been the tradition at ASTE-NE meetings, all sessions will be plenary. Presentations will be scheduled for 15-20 minutes depending on the number of contributed papers. This is a grand opportunity for graduate students to make their first presentation or for practitioners to speak about their unfinished research or project. You do not have to present a paper to be an active participant in the meeting. There will be multiple opportunities to discuss ideas and issues in science education, and to plan for next year's meeting. The Meeting registration fee is $85 ($40 students or limited income).
