Elaine Martin, UMass Medical School
Elaine R. Martin, Director of the Lamar Soutter Library at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, has transformed the library into a nationally recognized repository that has become both a virtual and physical hub of health care resources. A prolific grant writer, Dr. Martin obtained funding form the William Randolph Hearst Foundation to develop the UMassHealthNet Web site. Developed in collaboration with UMass Medical School's clinical partner, UMass Memorial Health Care and other local health care associations and agencies, UMassHealthNet provides general health care information in lay terms and information about health cares services and resources available in central and western Massachusetts. Dr. Martin and her staff are also responsible for the establishment of the Go Local Massachusetts Web site that delivers relevant and accurate information to consumers and health care professionals from the Cape and the Islands to the Berkshires. |

For her achievements as Librarian for the medical school's Lamar Soutter Library, including the development of the UMassHealthNet Web site that provides general healthcare information for central and western Massachusetts. She also secured a $6 million grant for the library when it was designated as the New England Regional Medical Library for 2006 through the GoLocal project of the National Library of Medicine.
