Dear Friends: The University is moving forward with a search for a permanent Chancellor for our distinguished Medical School, following extensive consultation with campus and community constituencies. I want to thank the many members of the University community who took the time to participate in the meetings or to write, call or email me with advice. The University of Massachusetts Medical School is recognized nationally for its medical education programs and for its cutting-edge medical research. I am confident that this search will culminate with the selection of an outstanding leader who will be able to build on the successes of the past and help to usher UMass Medical School into a new era of accomplishment and greatness. Our search will be led by a distinguished committee chaired by Philip W. Johnston, a University of Massachusetts Trustee who has devoted much of his career to health care issues and to public service. Our Nobel Laureate, Craig C. Mello, PhD, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, Blais University Chair in Molecular Medicine and professor of molecular medicine and cell biology, will serve as vice chair. The committee that Trustee Johnston and Dr. Mello will lead will be diverse and representative, bringing together campus and community leaders with other University officials and trustees. I have confidence that this committee, working closely with campus constituencies, will mount a diligent and comprehensive search that will culminate with the selection of an exceptional leader for one of the most exceptional academic health centers in the nation. The University of Massachusetts Medical School was led to distinction by former Chancellor Aaron Lazare, and as this search for a permanent successor begins, I must once again thank Aaron for his many years of visionary, steadfast and humane leadership. Our goal is to get this search up and running in very short order. To keep the campus community fully informed as the search unfolds, we are establishing a web site, www.massachusetts.edu/umassmedsearch, that will chronicle the process and serve as a means by which you may communicate to the search committee and to University leadership. It is important that your voice be heard as we search for the leader who will help to author a new chapter of greatness. I thank you for all that you do for the University of Massachusetts Medical School and invite you to be part of this exciting process. Sincerely, Jack M.
