UMass mourns the loss of Gov. Paul Cellucci
The entire University of Massachusetts community is saddened to learn of the death of Gov. Paul Cellucci. Gov. Cellucci devoted his life to the cause of public service and worked to improve the quality of life for every citizen of the Commonwealth.
During the final years of his life and as he struggled with his illness, Gov. Cellucci forged a close relationship with the University of Massachusetts Medical School and spearheaded the creation of the UMass ALS Champion Fund, which supports the groundbreaking work Dr. Robert H. Brown is undertaking at UMass Medical.
My sympathies go out to Gov. Cellucci's family and, more broadly, to the Commonwealth as a whole, as we have all lost a leader, a dedicated public servant and a voice for reason and compassion. I commend Chancellor Michael F. Collins and Dr. Brown for developing this important partnership with Gov. Cellucci and know that the ALS research taking place at the UMass Medical School -- work that has already led to important breakthroughs -- will continue and that the progress and advances we expect in the years ahead will serve as a fitting memorial to Gov. Cellucci's career and service.
While we at the University of Massachusetts mourn the loss of a great friend, we are proud of our association with Paul Cellucci and will be proud to continue this vital work in his name.
