President Caret on UMass mourning the loss of Krystle Campbell

It is my sad duty to report that one of the victims of the Marathon attack, Krystle Campbell, is a former UMass Boston student. My deepest sympathies go to Krystle's family, classmates and friends. I am sure the entire University of Massachusetts community will share in mourning her loss.

As a lifelong educator, I cannot help but note that the three people killed in this act of madness were all so young: Krystle Campbell at age 29, eight-year-old Martin Richard who lived in Dorchester, close to our UMass Boston campus, and Lu Lingz, a Chinese graduate student who was studying at Boston University.

To think of the suffering of their families - and of the lost promise and potential - only adds to our grief and must strengthen our resolve to move forward in a way that honors their memory.

President Robert L. Caret
