Prominent UMass Faculty Deliver Lectures on Healthcare,
Current Events and Culture; November 12 in Waltham

BOSTON - The University of Massachusetts will present some of its most accomplished thinkers, innovators and teachers at a One Day UMass to be held November 12, at the Conference Center at Waltham Woods.

The upcoming session is part of a national One Day UMass series that kicked off earlier this year in Florida, with those sessions attracting full houses and winning widespread praise from attendees.

"The professors were great communicators. I gained so much knowledge in one day - the experience was remarkable," said Gloria Phillips Ricles, a UMass Boston graduate.

Claire T. Carney, a graduate of UMass Dartmouth, said: "The One Day UMass I attended was superb. It made us realize learning is never ending."

The Waltham One Day UMass will feature dynamic, thought-provoking faculty presenters from throughout the five-campus UMass system:

• "The Truth About Lying: Recognizing the Liar in Your Life," Robert S. Feldman, UMass Amherst
• "Detection and Intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorders in Early Childhood," Alice Carter, UMass Boston
• "Dostum the Taliban Killer: Living with an Afghan Warlord," Brian Glyn Williams, UMass Dartmouth
• "What's A Helpless God to Do?" Andre Dubus III, UMass Lowell
• "Novel Retinal Therapies," Dr. Shalesh Kaushal, UMass Medical School
• "Healthcare Reform:  What do the Options Mean to Our Economy and Our Care?" a panel discussion moderated by J. Lynn Griesemer, AVP for Economic Development and Executive Director of the UMass Donahue Institute and panelists Greer Glazer, Dean of the UMass Boston School of Nursing and Health Sciences; Philip Johnston, UMass Amherst '69, UMass Trustee and President and Chief Executive Officer of Johnston Associates; and Thoru Pederson, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, UMass Medical School

One Day UMass, which is open to the public, takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., November 12, at the Conference Center at Waltham Woods, 860 Winter Street, Waltham, MA. Registration is $50.00 per person and includes continental breakfast, lunch and the six lectures.
