UMass President's Statement Regarding Proposed House Budget

BOSTON-The following is a statement from University of Massachusetts President Jack M. Wilson on the University's state appropriation in the Massachusetts House of Representatives state budget recommendations released today.

"The proposed Fiscal Year 2010 budget put forward by the Massachusetts House of Representatives would allow the University of Massachusetts to meet the needs of its 63,000 students and to advance its mission of service to the Commonwealth. The House proposal, which would appropriate $411,511,974 for the University of Massachusetts system and authorize the use of $81,637,031 in federal stimulus funds, would preserve academic programs and maintain stability at the University of Massachusetts.

"This is a proposal that our students, their families and all citizens of the Commonwealth should welcome. At a time when students and families are making important college decisions, this action sends a strong signal about the University's continued ability to provide quality and affordability.

"I want to thank Speaker DeLeo, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Murphy and the members of the committee for this expression of confidence in the University of Massachusetts. I recognize that the competition for state funding is intense and there are many vital and laudable programs seeking budget support. We therefore are especially grateful to the House and will work to our utmost to demonstrate that this expression of support and confidence is well founded. We appreciate the confidence placed in us by the Legislature and accept the responsibility placed upon us to do our part to improve the Massachusetts economy and create a better future for our citizens."
