UMass President's Statement Regarding Governor Patrick's Release of Federal Stimulus Funds to the University
BOSTON-The following is a statement from University of Massachusetts President Jack M. Wilson on today's announcement by Governor Patrick of the release of Federal Stimulus funds to the University.
"Governor Patrick is to be commended for taking this critical step toward restoring funding for public higher education in Massachusetts.
"For the University of Massachusetts, this proposed funding would mean that academic quality would be preserved and access and affordability would be maintained. The Governor's action represents an investment in the 63,000 students who attend the University of Massachusetts and an investment in our state's economic future. The students who are educated on our campuses and the faculty innovations and discoveries that flow from our campuses are key contributors to economic vitality and growth in Massachusetts.
"Governor Patrick's leadership on this issue and his work with President Obama to shape this program is a testament to his belief in and support for education as the primary force for transforming lives and communities. We now look forward to working with the Governor and the Legislature as the rest of the budget for higher education is shaped over the coming months. Our financial position in Fiscal Year 2010 will be determined by this infusion of stimulus funds and by the appropriation passed by the Legislature and signed by the Governor.
"Once the Commonwealth's budget is finalized, we look forward with enthusiasm to the possibility of avoiding the devastating cuts that would have been required and to rebating some or even most of the recently approved student fee increase. This is an important time for all of the University's constituencies to continue to advocate for funding that protects quality and affordability."
