SAT has replaced the Technology for Academic Development Subcommittee (TADS).

Charter

Charge

The Information Technology Council Subcommittee on Academic Technology (SAT) is charged with facilitating the development and implementation of a vision for effective utilization of technology in teaching, learning and scholarship at the University of Massachusetts. In support of the implementation of the vision, the goals are to:

  • Identify and facilitate the resolution of system-wide academic information technology issues and policies;
  • Encourage the sharing of information and expertise among campuses and promote faculty development activities;
  • Facilitate pilot projects and demonstrations to illustrate new uses of academic information technology
  • Monitor system and campus progress towards effective academic uses of technology;
  • Support new constituencies for technology-based delivery of academic programs;
  • Identify external funding opportunities for multi-campus academic information technology projects.

Committee Membership

SAT will incorporate a broad perspective by drawing its membership from faculty, administration and staff with expertise and responsibilities in instruction, academic policy and planning, and technology support. As needed, SAT may bring in campus expertise to assist in investigating, implementing or helping faculty integrate the pedagogy and technology into their classroom and research.

Representatives will be responsible for coordinating campus activities for SAT and therefore must have the authority to represent the campus on issues addressed by the subcommittee.

SAT will consist of approximately 15 members. The suggested composition includes:

  1. At least one Provost
  2. Provost Office staff from one or more of the campuses
  3. Faculty from each of the campuses
  4. Representation from the Academic Affairs department of the President's Office
  5. Representation from UMassOnline
  6. Representation from the five campus libraries
  7. Representation from a campus instructional technology center
  8. Representation from a campus information technology organization

The IT Council will select the SAT co-chairs, preferably a Provost and a faculty member.

Provosts will nominate their campus representatives from the Provost's Office and the faculty
(2 & 3 above). UMassOnline and the Library Directors will nominate their own representatives (5 & 6 above). The IT Council will identify representatives from the other categories and approve the final committee composition to ensure that all perspectives are covered.

Coordination with Other Committees

IT Council

The Information Technology Council, as the charging body for this group, will receive regular updates of committee progress. Summaries of SAT meetings will be available on the IT Council home page and a SAT co-chair will keep the IT Council apprised of progress at IT Council meetings. Recommendations will be submitted to the IT Council for approval and action.

Academic Advisory Council

All SAT recommendations that affect academic policy or direction will be reviewed with the Academic Advisory Council by the Provost representative to SAT.

UMassOnline

The work of SAT and UMassOnline overlaps in the area of faculty development and support for online courses. Close coordination will be required to prevent duplication of effort. UMassOnline will be asked to recommend representation to SAT to serve as a liaison between UMassOnline and SAT.

UMass Library Directors

The UMass Library Directors will be asked to recommend a representative to SAT to serve as a liaison between the two committees.
