Wuhan University is directly under the administration of the Education Ministry of the People's Republic of China. It is located in Hubei Province's capital Wuhan known as "The thoroughfare leading to nine provinces".

In April, 2006, the University of Massachusetts and Wuhan University signed a Memorandum of Understanding recognizing that universities are enriched by collaboration with institutions of higher learning in other countries. The scope of collaboration will include research and teaching partnerships, exchange of academic materials, organization of symposia and exchange of faculty, staff and students.
