The University of Massachusetts Confucius Institute is a non-profit education organization that is a partnership between the University of Massachusetts and the Office of Chinese Language International Council (Hanban). The Confucius Institute is a non-academic institute that promotes the teaching and understanding of Mandarin language and chinese culture on UMass campuses and in the broader community. Funds are approved by Hanban for faculty/staff initiatives to further those aims.

The University of Massachusetts Confucius Institute is a system-wide entity with an office at the UMass Boston campus. Applications for Confucius Institute funding are submitted once yearly by the Director of the Confucius Institute who works with Hanban to determine which proposals will be funded.
